Relocating to Houston

Did you know that Houston is the largest city in Texas, and the fourth largest in the U.S.? Between 2011 and 2012, 34,000 new residents moved to Houston. There are many reasons why this is a great city to relocate to.

Jobs

One of the main reason people move to Houston is for the strong job market. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics has released data stating there were more jobs created in Houston in the first half of 2013 than in any other city. The suburbs of Sugar Land and League City have extremely low unemployment rates. Houston is known as an innovator in finding and utilizing renewable energy systems, and this has produced a steady stream of new energy jobs. In addition, the city has seen strong growth in manufacturing, technology, and business services. Some major companies based in Houston include Phillips 66, ConocoPhillips, Sysco, Halliburton, Apache, Marathon Oil, Waste Management, and FMC Technologies.

Cost of Living

The Council for Community and Economic Research Cost of Living Index 2013 Annual Average showed that Houston has the third lowest overall cost of living out of the nation’s 20 most populated metropolitan areas. You will find that the housing costs are lower than in many other cities in the U.S. With an affordable and stable housing market, Houston is a great place for prospective first time homebuyers.

Education

If you have children, you can rest assured knowing that Houston provides top-notch education. The city has fourteen major institutions of higher learning. A few you might be familiar with include Rice University and the University of Houston. Out of all the schools in the Houston Independent School District, the state of Texas rated 57% of them as either Exemplary or Recognized. In 2013, over 375,000 students in the Houston area were enrolled in higher education. Also, in that same year, more than 67,000 degrees and certificates were awarded to students.

Great Restaurants

For those who enjoy fine dining, Houston has a variety of restaurants that are sure to please even the pickiest of eaters. In fact, Houston was even named “one of the country’s most exciting places to eat” by food critic Pete Wells. A few options include authentic TexMex, Vietnamese, Mexican, traditional Texas barbeque and more! The city is also known as the Culture & Culinary Capital of Texas. There are more than 7,500 restaurants covering over 60 cuisines.

With its great job market, low cost of living, fine dining, education and other attractions, Houston is a very attractive city to live in. For more information about Houston, you can visit www.houstontx.gov.
