Living in Houston

Now that you have moved to Houston and are settled in, you can now learn about all the great ways to spend your free time. From pro sports to arts and culture, you’ll find that Houston has a little something for everyone.

Sports

Houston is known for being a major league sports town. If you’re a fan of baseball, you can head over to Minute Maid Park and catch an Astros game. Do you prefer football instead? If so, be sure to go to Reliant Stadium for a Houston Texans game. Even soccer fans are in luck! BBVA Compass Stadium, home of the Dynamos, hosts many soccer matches during the year. Houston is also home to the NBA Championship winning Rockets, who play at the Toyota Center. You will find that year round, there is always a sporting event to go to.

Arts and Culture

The city of Houston has an ongoing vision to emphasize public art, and continues to expand the opportunities for residents to enjoy art in public places. There are nineteen different art museums, all within walking distance of each other, in the museum district. A couple you will find include the Houston Museum of Fine Arts and the Houston Museum of Natural Science. At night you can catch a live show at the Miller Outdoor Theatre in Hermann Park, which is just across the street from the museum district. You can see performances by the Houston Symphony Orchestra, the Houston Grand Opera, and the Houston Ballet.

Outdoor Life

Houston has two of the 10 largest urban public parks in the U.S. – Cullen Park and George Bush Park. Downtown Houston’s largest park, Discovery Green, is a great place to go for year-round activities that include everything from Zumba classes to a seasonal skating rink. The city also contains over 50,000 acres of beautiful parkland. Another great place to go take a nice walk and get some fresh air is Memorial Park and Trail. Houston does get quite steamy and hot in the summer, but there are plenty of places to cool off, including Schlitterbahn, Splashtown and splash pads around the city.

You will find that there is never a shortage of events or activities to keep you busy while living in Houston. You may even pick up a new hobby or two!
